Our company's home is just one indication of our tradition of stability. We have inhabited the same original location since we opened our doors for the first time 77 years ago. The unique design of our facility is in part due to the fact that we have added on as needed, "growing" our original building to meet our expanding needs.
Founder Louis Hentelff, a Russian immigrant, arrived in Utah in 1928 during the Great Depression. He and his brother-in-law, Ben Novikoff, approached a local retailer and began manufacturing. During World War II, when steel became unavailable because of the war effort, they used plywood instead of steel for the springs. Later, when steel became once again available, they retrofitted all the plywood springs with steel. Intermountain Furniture Manufacturing Company's first order, which consisted of two sofas, was funded by our first retailer. This enabled us to buy the materials needed to build the sofas. Today we have over 70 employees servicing over 300 retail outlets across the western United States and Canada. Over the years, we have serviced large national retail chains as well as local distributors. We have always led the industry in implementing technology. We were one of the first furniture manufacturers in the west to use staple guns. We were the first to initiate an employee profit-sharing plan. Our willingness to move boldly forward by implementing new technology and by staying on the cutting edge of innovation in other areas has been a key to our success.
